10 ways to improve your Twitter experience

Not so much a set of rules……just a short and sweet list that you might want to take something from…. enjoy….
- Go mobile. If you really want to embrace Twitter then it takes commitment. 1 tweet a week just isn’t going to cut it so using a mobile app is not only a great way to kill time commuting (unless you’re driving) but it’ll help you stay connected. My personal favourite is the HootSuite iPhone app.
- Be a regular. Try and tweet at roughly the same time of day at least once. You’ll soon get to know the people who are also 7am -8am regulars!
- Give thanks. If someone is nice enough to RT you or give you a #ff shout out ten say thank you…… it’s just polite!
- Use @ mentions. Often the biggest mistake people make when first starting out with Twitter is just using others names. Use their @id, it’ll be likely to get their attention.
- RT and comment. Show that you’re not just blindly RTing. Add a little comment…. it could be something as simple as “Great article Michael you are a true inspiration to us all” …. or something like that!
- Embrace New Twitter. Some of you may like using HootSuite or TweetDeck but have you had a proper look at New Twitter? It’s very cool.
- Build lists. Lists are wonderful things to create and be added to. Just make sure the people you’re adding are relevant to the title of your list.
- Try out paper.li. Great if you want to quickly skim over the last day on Twitter. Even better if you’ve created one with a really good list (like our photographers list paper.li/MemoryGate/photographers).
- I don’t care what you’re eating for lunch but I might be interested where you’re eating it. Use the location options, especially if you’re attending public events where you might even be able to meet up with some of your Twitter friends….. this is social media after all.
- Be consistent. If you tweet 100 times a day that’s fine…… but do it everyday. If you’re consistent then your followers are going be be more likely to predict your habits and interact with you. It’s also quite a shock if someone who hasn’t tweeted in weeks suddenly send 1 a minute….. that usually leads to an un-follow.
Most important of all…. it’s social….. have fun and I’ll see you out there! @memorygate
