A day in the life of a portrait photographer
There’s no such thing as a typical day for any photographer but I thought it would be interesting to share a random day out of my life.
7am - early start today and the prospect of commuting across London before 9am with my gear doesn’t feel me with joy.
7:45 post our portrait session mail-outs …. 2nd class so hopefully it should get the phone ringing early next week!
8am all aboard the 7:57 to Waterloo as I get slowly squeezed into a corner I’m quite glad I’ve packed light.
9:00 Last night was the soft launch of the new website I’ve spent the last few weeks developing. I’m keeping an eye on any issues or feedback whilst having a quick coffee.
9:30 10 minute shoot with the lovely Gail Porter for the front cover of the next London Mum’s magazine at Tibits just off Regent Street.

9:45 – 10:30 on the tube again had an idea for this article so I made a start in iPhone notes
Writing this bit on an escalator in Clapham South
10:30-12 photo shoot with 3 month old baby in Clapham. Neighbour drops by who has a 8 month old under his arm….Do a bit of shameless promotion for myself, London Mums and my friend’s baby fair at the weekend.

12-1 As it was a sunny day I thought I have a spot of launch on Clapham common. Quick check of emails and a little tweet too.

1-2pm get the train back the office and use the time to write a bit more of this article. People are always asking me how I find the time to write all of these posts….. here’s your answer…. public transport.
Also use the time to send some thanks for the RTs on Twitter…. I’ve also been quite active on FourSquare today for no other reason than I felt like it and mixes things up on the Twitter feed.

Get response back from Joe asking for my opinion on his website so I take 10 mins or so to drop him a little email….. because that’s the sort of chap I am!

2pm Back at the office. Downloading cards and burning DVD backups whilst making a few calls to confirm tomorrows portrait session and viewings. Also manage to make a couple of booking for next week….. nothing like a bit if good weather to put people in the mood for photography.
2:20 Loose a memory card and spend 10 minutes looking for it before I realise it’s sitting right in front of me….. time to tidy the desk methinks!
2:30 Try to deal with the 50 emails have dropped into my inbox this morning. Follow a few people back on twitter and write a quick post for London Mum’s Magazine. The reminds me that I still have to edit some shots from a Save the Children press conference I attended last week.

3pm Waste 20 mins with back to back calls from companies who want to either get me to the top of Google or add me to their directory for an archaic fee….. I can manage my own FB marketing thank you very much
3:20 Do a little bit of Facebook marketing
4pm Coffee machine filled and time for some serious editing. Couple of images for tomorrows viewing need finishing plus as massive shoot we did for a riding therapy centre in New Forest last week needs sending off tomorrow and I still have the PSDs to finish and convert.
Skype turned off but I’m getting ever distracted but the lovely weather outside.

4:30 couple of comments come in so I just send a little reply…. it’s good to stay connected!
4:35 Back to editing and I get a little distracted by today’s images….. I think perhaps I’m a little smitten with Ms Porter… quick edit of those and it’s back to babies.
6:30 Baby editing done time for dinner…. Mrs S has come home from work with ice cream!

8pm back to editing
10pm editing done time to watch a bit of 10 o’clock Live followed by Question Time. It doesn’t hurt to keep up with current events!
11:30 clear another 50 or so emails, send a couple of tweets and check out the stats and incoming links at PhotoCreative 365. Add Joe to our directory.
SWPP membership is due so I write a cheque and have that ready to post first thing.
12:45 Nackered …….time for bed. Download the latest New Media Podcast, put the earphones in and get some shut-eye. It’s been a long day but a good one!
Thankfully everyday isn’t quite so full and sometimes the early mornings are replaced by late late nights. I hope that gives you a slight insight into my typical day. If you’d like to share yours then drop us an email and we’ll post it here at PhotoCreative365. It’s actually quite fun to do!
