Creating a photo walk – Making the map – iPhoto

Arguably the first thing you need for a photo walk is a route … You can’t know where you’re going ….. without a map!

Even though I am a former Scout and I do love a bit of traditional map reading I wanted to create something that embraces the latest technology and media.

When I think about modern maps straight away Google Maps springs to mind.

To start off then I created a very crude route map from a Google Maps screen capture.

The problem with this is that firstly it isn’t breaking many new grounds in terms of embracing new technology and aside from simply printing out the map there isn’t many ways to effectively use and distribute the map.

Some might argue that a simple print out might suffice ….. but where’s the fun in that?

As I was planning the route, I took some pictures with my iPhone. It wasn’t until I got home that I noticed the Places feature which is part of iOS 4.

This feature shows me where I have taken the different photos on my camera roll. The closer I zoom in the more areas specific the tags appear.

If I have a collection of images all in one place then my phone bungles them together. If I click through then I get to view those particular images.

Using the Geo Tagging

This got me thinking…. If the images had their location stored with them then this could be a wonderful tool for mapping out a route. Each photo could effectively act as markers which could then be loaded onto any iPhone (or any smart phone hopefully).

I wanted to see how this information is carried so I did a couple of experiments using iPhoto and then exporting to Flickr.
