Damian McGillicuddy Light Modifier review

Submitted by on June 14, 2011 – 10:00 amNo Comment

I have to say the beauty dish is very versatile and comes with all sort of fitments so it can be used as a soft box, beauty dish and also has various diffusers to help you get the effect you are looking for. It also is very mobile and fits easily back into the nice small bag you get to pack it into.

All in all I have been very impressed with the dish to date, it isn’t cheap (£385) but in my eyes you get what you pay for, and if you want a quality versatile light modifier with guaranteed superb beauty effect results then you can’t go wrong with one of Damian’s modifiers.

The key design of the inside of the beauty dish is the shiny silver reflective surface which helps achieve the relevant contrast you are looking for in your lighting, a lot of the other products on the market are more of a matt effect and simply don’t come close to the effect you get with this modifier.

I wish I had invested in one sooner and not wasted my money on 2-3 other solutions first which I have ended up putting these in the loft to collect dust as they didn’t provide me with the effects I was craving from my lighting.

The only suggestion I can make is that perhaps a brief diagram be included to show how to put the various configurations together which might help people as there are no instructions with it. However it is very easy to put together even without any instructions.

I would rate the 36” beauty dish as follows:

Ratings out of 5.

  • Quality of product = 4.5
  • End Results = 5 (as seen on the MMOS course)
  • Versatility = 5
  • Service = 4.5
  • Ease of use and setup = 4.5
  • Value for money = 4

Overall = 4.5 / 5

The McGillicuddy Multi-Modifier and all of Damian’s lighting modifiers can can found at www.art4artssake.co.uk/light-modifiers.html

Next Tuesday James will share how you can adapt the modifier to use with Bowen’s lights.
