Day 51 – Affordable wireless triggers

We came across these rather affordable wireless triggers at the 2010 SWPP trade-show. The Seculine Twinlink T2D Transmitter and Receiver Kit costs £119.99 from Warehouse Express.

In the kit you get a receiver, transmitter and all the cables you need. The receiver fixture clip can be easily mounted onto a tripod although there is also a handy magnet also attached.

You have 16 radio channels and a 1/250 sec max flash sync. The range is apparently 200m but we’ve haven’t really tested that far yet.

We brought a couple of kits and have been playing around with these for a few weeks now both with studio strobes and flash guns. Considering the fact that one of us is a Nikon and the other a Canon everything works together quite seamlessly.

Obviously you don’t have a TTL function you have with PocketWizards but for the price it’s a pretty good buy.

The only slight issues I have is:

  • It would be nice to have a strap to hang the receiver on a flash head rather than using magnets (We have a couple of Elichrome strobes which have plastic bodies).
  • The transmitter is powered by a CR2032 battery which have a tendency to run flat pretty quickly. (A fiver will buy you 12 of these though).
  • The auto power off can be quite annoying if you forget to set it for longer than a minute!

So you you want a cheaper alternative to the Bowens Pulsar or PocketWizards and you’re not too worried about TTL syncing and a 1/250 max flash sync then give them a go!
