The 1st Year Baby Promotion

This isn’t by any means a new type if promotion, in fact the MPA here in the UK have been running pretty much the same promotion since 1988 (Cherubs). It is however very successful and something that I have been using since the start of 2011.

Fish

On my way to a meeting the other day I passed through Vauxhall station in London and saw a sight which first made me think of a great idea for a marketing campaign but also of an old customer service video I watched years ago while working as a boil in a bag chef (I’m no Gordon Ramsey put it that way).

The Personal Trainer Promotional Image

For portrait photographers gyms can be a good source of referrals but they are often overlooked. But if you think about it every yummy mummy wants to get back in shape after childbirth and gyms are often filled with young parents with a descent income.

The Local Business Group Shot

This marketing campaign is useful not only as a networking tool but also as a way to introduce your business to the local community. You could try this at any time of year but I’ve found it works particularly well either when you first open your studio or in the run up to Christmas.

The Local Business Discount Cards

This marketing campaign aims to bring back the sense of being part of a local business community. I should stress that the aim of this campaign is not just to get half price coffee but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be a little added bonus.

Teach Photography Basics

Let’s face it, everyone today is an aspiring photographer whether they are taking pictures of their kids with a camera phone or shooting over your shoulder at a wedding with an entry level DSLR.

Sell a Non-Photography Product

Perhaps it’s my entrepreneurial spirit they made me think of this marketing campaign, or perhaps it’s just another good way to create some interest in your business.

The products or services you sell don’t have to cost tens of thousands of pounds (or dollars), they can be simple, affordable and convenient.

The 365 Project

When I think back to my photographic/artistic education the most productive year was my Art and Design foundation course at Wimbledon School of Art. It was a one year pre-degree course in which you spend the first 10 weeks doing 10 different projects in all different areas of art and design before choosing an area to specialise in for the rest of the year. I choose photography in the end but the course also gave me a taster of different areas such as fine art painting, 3D design and sculpture.

Creating a Viral Video

Creating a video with the intention of it ‘going viral’ isn’t the easiest of things to accomplish but if you use your imagination and stay clear of Gay Asian Kittens then even a modest amount of interest can aid your marketing efforts.

Have a Thing

Your thing doesn’t have to be your USP but it should be something that people remember you for and something that sets you apart from the crowd. I guess by definition that is a unique selling point but it’s a little more abstract than that.

The Discount Book

There are dozens of different discount or voucher books available for all sorts of different industries. I’m sure at some point you’ve been offered the opportunity to appear in one, for a small fee of course.

Shooting Santa

When I talk about Shooting Santa in the run up to Christmas other portrait photographers often look at me baffled and ask ‘Why do you bother? You can’t make much money doing that.’

In a way that might be true but short term financial gain isn’t what I do it for. My real reason for shooting Santa……. Data collection and promotion.

The Pop-up Studio

Pop-up studios and shops have become increasingly popular in recent years and not just in the photography industry. This is by no way a new type of marketing for photographers, in fact the UK’s most successful photography franchise is built around leads from mall stands.

The Rapid Responder

I know for a fact that I’ve secured bookings purely based on a quick and thorough response to both email and phone enquiries. It’s also nice to get response emails that start with “Thank-you for your rapid response”.

Publishing Prices Part 2

Last week’s marketing campaign [Publishing Prices] was the first part of 2 looking at publishing prices on your photography website. I suggested two options which you might want to experiment with and here are the next two options.

Publishing Prices

A well known photographer once told me “The only reason people ask how much is that it is the only question they have.”
In some respects this is true but the decision to publish prices and rates on your website can make a dramatic impact on your online marketing efforts.

The Newsletter

There’s nothing simpler than creating a monthly newsletter that I’m surprised more photographers don’t do it. After all, you have a big database of past clients that at some point you’ll want to ask if they’d like to use your services again.

Say Hello to Everyone

This marketing strategy was suggested to me by my good friend and photographer with over 30 years of experience, Tim Hoy.

Christmas

What! I hear you say….. Christmas….! Well I was just thinking the same thing this week but then this happened……

Raffle Prizes for Schools

This is another low cost marketing campaign which is prefect for portrait photographers and works particularly well when used with The School Fair Set-Up.

The School Fair Set-Up

Whilst working for a high street portrait studio franchise a few years ago this marketing campaign was suggested to us from our head office as a summer campaign. For the most part it worked quite well but there could have been some improvements so I’ve included those in this article.

Online Directories

One of the easiest ways to build inbound links to to your website is to sign up to online directories. The effectiveness of such sites is of course debatable but online directories do come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and the right ones can help bring in some good referrals.

The Gift List

Today’s wedding photography client is very different from days gone by (or so I’m told). Some of them have children, some have been married before but for the most part many couples already live together either in their own or rented property.

The Directory

Link love is a wonderful thing and regardless of it’s actual effectiveness in terms of SEO (increasingly less and less if you believe everything you read from certain experts) but it’s still the top of people’s marketing agenda.

Wedding Fairs

Wedding fairs or fayres can be fruitful when it comes to getting leads but at the time they can costly and hard to get into. You do have a couple of options when it comes to how you approaching a wedding fair.

Delivering Your Work

Technically speaking today’s marketing campaign is really business ‘best practice’ or something that might fall into the realms of customer service. Delivering your work.

Shout Hire Me!

A couple of weeks ago I was taking an afternoon off to do a bit of shopping in Sutton High Street (although that isn’t important). As I came out of the train station I was greeted by a cheerful fello who had a microphone and a mobile speaker. He was ‘spreading the good word’ but that isn’t the important part either.

Build a Non-Photography Site

This marketing campaign isn’t for the faint hearted and requires a considerable amount of commitment but it’s fruit can ultimately be plentiful and delicious (finically speaking).

The Appointment Card

I’ve experimented with several forms of advertising in the past and one form of print advertising I’ve been mildly happy with has been on wedding dress shop appointment cards. After a while I started thinking….. why am I paying to appear as a small ad when I could produce these cards at the same cost?

Writing a Flattery Article

This might sound like a strange idea for a marketing campaign as it’s unlikely to bring you hundreds of bookings overnight. What it will do however is get you (and your site) noticed by people you admire. The marketing campaign is really more about building relationships and raising your public profile.

Start Your Own Podcast

I’m a keen consumer and producer of podcasts…… you can hear my rambles every Monday at photocreative365.com
In fact the New Media Photographer podcast where Trevor had a regular guest spot, is how I first came across Current Photographer.

Build your referral network

As a wedding photographer there’s nothing worse than receiving a great lead from a big spending past client only to realise that you’re already booked!

Publish a Book

Self publishing today isn’t what it used to be…… it’s miles better! What are the marketing benefits of publishing a book? Do I really have to answer that question?!?!?

Blog Everything

The title of this marketing campaign really should be ‘Keep hammering away at those keywords!’

Get Your Social Media 5 A Day

Today’s marketing campaign for photographers is an à la carte approach social media and a great way to keep tabs on all of your preferred platforms.

The Behind-the-Scenes Video

What questions do prospective wedding clients ask you when they first meet you? How easy is it to explain what you do and how you work? You can answer all of these questions and more with the simplest of things….. a behind-the-scenes video.

45 Minutes of Daily Social Media Marketing

45 minutes of daily social media marketing. This week’s marketing campaigns for photographers is designed to help business owners manage their social media time more effectively.

Marketing Campaigns for Photographers – Wedding Venues: Part 1

This is the tenth in our series looking at different marketing campaigns for photographers. out of 10 times the first thing any couple looking to get married will search for is the venue. It’s become harder and harder to become a recommended photographer in many venues especially if you’re new to an area or in fact the wedding industry.

Marketing Campaigns for Photographers – Wedding Venues: Part 2

Last week we looked at one way to associate yourself with local venues using your blog. Today’s post is something you’ll want to do in addition to last week’s post rather than instead of it.

Baby Passport Pictures

Whatever you think about a 3 year old traveling with a passport that has a picture of him or her at 6 days old……. it’s a goldmine for studio portrait photographers.

Getting Press

Raise your profile by seeking press coverage. Approach your local magazines and news papers and offer them something interesting to publish.

Keyrings

The humble keyring…..this isn’t just a gift…… it’s a personalised business card you’ve made especially for each and every one of your clients…… and it works wonders!

The Exhibition

Today’s campaign is about organizing an exhibition of your work. This campaign can be done even if you don’t have a studio. You can even organise a group exhibition with some other local photographers to save on costs.

Refer a Friend

This is the fifth in our series looking at different marketing campaigns for photographers. I’m sure you know this one but it’s as simple as “If you recommend me to a friend then you’ll get a ………”

#archiveday

This week we’re looking at another social media based marketing campaign but this time we’re using Twitter. #archiveday was the hashtag suggested just a couple of weeks ago by New Media Photographer’s Rosh Sillars.

The Facebook Group Tag

Last summer British cellular network Orange launched a very clever social media campaign. So I was wondering how as a wedding photographer I could do the same thing.

Gift Vouchers

This is the second in our series looking at different marketing campaigns for photographers. This is a great little campaign as not only is it effective but it’s great for building relationships with other businesses.

Win a Car!

This is the first in our series looking at different marketing campaigns for photographers. I first came across this campaign at a Mitche Graf seminar at last years’ SWPP convention here in London. The campaign Mitche recalled was forwarded to him from a US based photographer who specialized in senior portraits.

Tomorrow I’ll be publishing a list of the most popular posts from the past 2 years here at PhotoCreative365 but with over 1000 articles that still leaves out quite a few of my favourite rants, ideas and thoughts on the business of photography. There’s lots to read so get stuck in!

Enjoy……

Client Capacity

Client capacity is exactly what the name suggests it is.
It’s the most amount of clients your business can handle whilst allowing for those extraneous variables and hiccups like re-shoots, extra travelling and larger orders/assignments.

Just so we’re clear – I’m not afraid to undercut you

I keep coming across articles and blog posts from photographers where they warn of dangers and pitfalls of hiring an amateur photographer.
Indeed I’m sure I’ve written articles or dispensed similar advice myself at some point.
And it’s true, if you want a professional job done then hire a professional. That’s just good advice.

The Digital File Anticlimax

I run a high volume baby portrait business and for the most part many of our clients aren’t the worlds most affluent. This means we made a decision to sell products that are affordable but have a high profit margin. I mean of course: prints and digital files.

Give yourself a boost

I don’t know about you but I’m sick of the term ‘hard times’. Unfortunately that is the reality of the world we live in and it’s pretty rare to find a business that hasn’t been effected by the downturn, current financial climate or whatever other label you want to put on it.

Beware of public opinion – Misinformed or otherwise

This week my friend’s half a million pound a year business closed its doors less than a month after a completely inaccurate (and later retracted) story in The Sun newspaper.
My friend didn’t run a photography business but it’s still a worrying thing to think that public opinion can be so dramatically swayed.

The Green Photographer

What with my gallivanting around on public transport and the hammering my Oyster card gets on a daily basis it has been suggested that I am somewhat of a green photographer.

Lazy LightRoom Editing

What is the difference between a wedding or portrait photographer with a £500 camera who shoots in his or her spare time and someone who does all their editing in LightRoom and doesn’t own a copy of the full Photoshop software?

Shoot to burn or not shoot to burn (with a bit of an Historical Perspective)

That is the big question for many photographers when they start out but it’s also the second question that most clients ask (the first of course being how much?)

Formal Photographic Qualifications

I had a great question come in from Lynne Bardell regarding formal photographic qualifications I was wondering if you had ever done anything on what photographic courses people have done and why?

Automating your life while you’re away

It may or may not surprise that you but for the last 10 days I’ve actually been on holiday……. yes a wedding and portrait photographer taking a holiday in the middle of the busiest time of year!

Is your photography business a 4×4?

On my way to a photo-shoot I passed by your archetypal Chelsea Mum dropping off her kids to school driving an off-road, fuel guzzling beast of a 4×4 Land Rover.

Wasting Time on Branding

Before you gasp in horror at the fact that I might be suggesting that branding for a photographer is a waste of time perhaps I should rephrase the title…..
Wasting time on the wrong type of branding and not realising what clients like about you and why they remember you.

Shooting Babies

I have this really bad habit and the problem is that I’m not likely to change it as I still find it quite amusing.
I keep telling people I shoot babies…..

5 Things that irritate me about your website

This is aimed at you photographers but there are a lot of bad habits here that many of you are guilty of.
Why do they irritate me? Because I know that you know better!

Changing the way you sell your photography

I happened upon this article from Paul Melcher – It’s Time for Independent Photographers to Consider Subscription Pricing. A new way for photographers to introduce subscription style pricing.

Delete that picture of me!

Vanity is a strange thing and something that as a portrait photographer we are constantly dealing with. I’m not referring to our own vanity (or ego) but rather the vanity of our subjects.

Using images from training courses

As a photographer, training shouldn’t be a luxury it should (in my mind at least) be viewed as a necessity.
After all, if you’re not learning new things how can you progress both as a photographer and as a business?

Working for Free – Charities

One of the biggest mountains to climb is knowing when and what to charge for your photography. It doesn’t matter how good you are or how many fans you have on Facebook if at the end of the day you can’t make a living from what you’re doing. But what about charities?

Photographic trends I’ll be happy to see the back of

In all honesty it’s a list of things that I hate to see but we’ve all been guilty of at some point.

The art (and science) of flattery in portraiture

How many times as photographers have we heard those immortal words “Just make sure you make you look good”? I don’t know about you but I’ve never intentionally set out to do anything but make people look good!

10 ways to improve your photography and your business

Like any of these lists these are just a few ideas that might help you develop your photography skills and your product. Better product = better profits ….. at least that’s the theory!

Defining being a photographer & The future of being a photographer

Let’s face it, to be a modern photographer, especially when you’re starting out, it’s far too easy to become a ‘jack of all trades photographer.’
When a client is looking for a photographer they are not necessarily looking for a specialist (those are expensive).

Storybooks, digital media and the death of the 5×7 print

Choice and variety is a wonderful thing. How a wedding photographer offers their finished product can in many ways define what type of photographer they are.

The social wedding photographer

Photographers ain’t what they used to be …… but who is the social photographer?
The modern photographer can connect with his/her clients like never before and in so many ways.
I’m not just talking about social media but the whole wedding photography experience has changed dramatically in the last 30 years.

Open question to the photography educators of Britian

What are you doing to prepare your students for an over saturated market in terms of business skills?

Are your pictures timeless?

I was just pondering this thought after attending a talk with Trevor and Faye Yerbury.
He described simple, black and white images as timeless. That may at first seem a pretty valid point, but 30 years ago black and white photography was considered dated or at the very least, unfashionable.

In various articles I’ve referenced the ‘client capacity’ concept but I’m not sure if I’ve ever really sat down a written a dedicated article about it and why knowing what your client capacity is can be very important.

Client capacity is exactly what the name suggests it is.
It’s the most amount of clients your business can handle whilst allowing for those extraneous variables and hiccups like re-shoots, extra travelling and larger orders/assignments.

It’s not really a random target to aim for but really a calculation based on what resources you have and how you use them.

Back in lab days, printing rolls of film , it was much easier got me work work out what my capacity was.
I knew that each machine could scan and print 15 rolls of film an hour and that I could (if I was sober enough) get three machines working at full throttle for at least a couple of hours before the machines got a paper jam or a cog broke.
This meant that I could print through the night averaging about 30 rolls an hour and dealing with all of the problems at the same time.
If someone told me I had 100 rolls to print I used to think to myself “Great, I’ll go to the bar till 12 and I should be done 4am”
Those were the days!

Today (thank goodness) I’m more concerned with how many babies I can shoot a week rather than how many rolls of film I can process but the logic works the same.

Take a typical portrait studio. Work out how much time each client takes up.
For example;
15 minutes to make a booking and to confirm shoot
1 hour shooting time
1 hour editing
1 hour viewing
45 preparing order and doing paperwork
Total = 4 hours

Then you need to work out how much time you spend on all the other stuff.

Accounting
Blogging
Social Media
Marketing
Staring at the ceiling
Design work
Website work and SEO
etc etc

If you want to work a 40 hour week then it’s easy to work out what your clients capacity is.

All that other stuff – 40 hours = time left for clients divided by 4

So if all that other stuff takes up 8 hours then you have a client capacity of 8 a week.

Doesn’t sound a lot does it?

Then again 8 clients a week might sound great but it’s important to know that if you intent to shoot 10 a week then you’ll be working a 48 hour week (that’s nearly 10 hours a day if you work 5 days a week).
Oh and that’s not even taking into account all of those other little things that can make your working week that little bit longer!

If working longer and later into the night doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then you have to consider other options.

For a studio just adding one photographer that only shoots, edits and does viewings will increase your capacity by 120%

With a capacity of 18 shoots a week you can increase that further by outsourcing your editing which gives you a client capacity of 24.

Say for example your average sale is £300.
With 8 shoots a week you’re looking to make £2400 a week.

By outsourcing editing and adding another photographer you could be looking at a capacity figure of £7200 a week.

That’s a increase of somewhere in the region of a quarter of a million pounds a year in turnover!

Of course you’ll have to find those extra clients from somewhere but at least when you start to book 10 sessions a week you know what you need to do to accommodate for that. More importantly by knowing that your capacity is only 8 sessions a week you’ll know that you will have to make some changes and it’s up to you to decide what the best ones are.

Hubspot, creators of the Inbound Internet Marketing Blog, Grader.com and many other useful resources have one of the best collections of free ebooks and whitepapers for anyone with an email address to download.

I must admit I’ve not even read them all but there is constantly lots of new information being made available which can give your business that added boost in the new year.

A good place to start is the Marketing Kits, here’s a few worth looking at to begin with:

New & Emerging Media Marketing Kit

Traditionally companies reached their consumers through trade shows, print advertising, and other (outbound) marketing methods. But there is a radical transformation taking place in the work force today. Generation X, generation Y and now Millennials represent a greater portion of the work force than the Baby Boomers. These new consumers start their shopping experience online using newer media such as online video, micro blogging and mobile hand-held devices. In order to remain competitive, businesses must learn to adapt and reach these consumers where they are searching for the products and services that they sell. Download the New Media Marketing Kit >>>

Twitter for Business Marketing Kit

Twitter is all the rage on the internet, but it’s not just a cool toy. It has valid business applications and has even demonstrated potential for ROI. With Twitter you can extend your reach, create buzz, listen to your community and network with customers, prospects and industry experts! Download the Twitter Marketing Kit >>>

Facebook for Business Marketing Kit

Facebook is a remarkable tool (a social utility, as they would say) for connecting people with those around them. And, as with any social media tool, marketers have an opportunity to use Facebook to expand their online footprint and engage with customers directly. Learn how to get started using Facebook to market your business. Download the FaceBook Marketing Kit >>>

Blogging for Business Marketing Kit

Blogs are no longer just online personal journals – they are now key business tools. Blogs allow you to engage in a conversation with your customers while improving your website’s search engine rank. Learn key tactics for business blogging and engaging in the blogosphere to grow your business. Download the Blog Marketing Kit >>>

SEO for Lead Generation Kit
