Klout – The standard of Twitter Influence

Submitted by on August 21, 2010 – 10:00 am6 Comments

How influential are you on Twitter? Do you care? Well, if you do care or even if you’re a tiny bit interested why not get yourself a Klout account.

I first came across Klout in HootSuite and we did mention it on our post The HootSuite social media dashboard.

What is a Klout Score?

The Klout Score is the measurement of your overall online influence. The scores range from 0 to 100 with higher scores representing a wider and stronger sphere of influence. Klout uses over 25 variables to measure True Reach, Amplification Probability, and Network Score. The size of the sphere is calculated by measuring True Reach (engaged followers and friends vs. spam bots, dead accounts, etc.). Amplification Probability is the likelihood that messages will generate retweets or spark a conversation. If the user’s engaged followers are highly influential, they’ll have a high Network Score.

Here is a brief overview of how your Klout score is measured…..

True Reach

This is basically the size of your engaged audience.

Factors measured: Followers, Friends, Total Retweets, Follower/Follow Ratio, Followed Back %, @ Mention Count, List Count, List Followers Count.

Amplification Probability

The likelihood that your content will be acted on.

Factors measured: Unique Retweeters, Unique Messages Retweeted, Follower Retweet %, Unique @ Senders, Follower Mention %, Inbound Messages Per Outbound Message, Update Count.

Network Influence

How influential are your engaged audience.

Factors measured: List inclusions, Follower/Follow Ratio, Followed Back %, Unique Senders, Unique Retweeters, Influence of Followers, Influence of Retweeters and Mentioners

The Fun Stuff

Once you have a Klout profile you’ll be able to see all sots of stats that might make you laugh out loud delight or cry in despair.

Score Summary

Influence Matrix

Apparently I’m a Socialiser….

You are the hub of social scenes and people count on you to find out what’s happening. You are quick to connect people and readily share your social savvy. Your followers appreciate your network and generosity

Analysis

There’s loads more graphs and things to look at including both score and content analysis. What I do quite like in HootSuite is the ability to filter your followers tweets by their Klout score.

The little numbers under the profile pictures are the Klout score so if you only want to ‘hang with the cool kids’ then feel free to filter out the rest (you Twitter snobs)!

How often is Klout updated? Mine seems to have been stuck for weeks, despite my weeding out spammy followers, gaining new followers, tweeting, getting re-tweeted, thanking those who RT me, etc. I never moves at all. Why?

Good question…. I’ll have to look into that!

You can update every 6 days using refresh score button on lower right (have to be logged in). It normally takes less than an hour to refresh the score.

Interesting…. In the Influence Matrix I’m now a Conversationalist

You love to connect and always have the inside scoop. Good conversation is not just a skill, it’s an art. You might not know it, but when you are witty, your followers hang on every word.
