Starting a 365 project in 2011

Submitted by on December 29, 2010 – 10:00 am4 Comments

As we edge closer to another new year we’ll all inevitably (with the best intentions) be making our new year resolutions and promises.

Have you planned any new projects for 2011?

Perhaps the simplest project for a photographer would be a 365 project.

At the risk of upsetting 365 purists…… partaking in such a project doesn’t mean shooting and posting a new photo everyday.

Your 356 project could be as simple as a daily tweet ….. but here’s a few ideas to give you a little inspiration.

First of all you’ll need a place to host your 365 project and there are plenty of good places to do it.

You might be a little put off by a daily projects but you can schedule posts in all (excluding Flickr) of these platforms
WordPress
Free and easy to upgrade if you so wish. In my opinion the best open source CMS out there. We already have plenty of posts regarding WordPress on this site and if you’re new to WordPress then have a look at our tutorial videos.

Tumblr

Tumblr is a great platform for a daily project and integrated with twitter it’s even better. You do have the option to queue posts and have them automatically published at specific times of the day. It’s perfect for users with smart phone and I can recommend the iPhone app for its sheer ease of use.

Twitter
It’s not just about telling people what you had for breakfast or stalking Justin Bieber! New Twitter is even better for sharing images and the mobile apps make it nice an easy to share and consume.
If you want to schedule tweets then HootSuite is the way to go.
Flickr

Not only is it a massive community but there are already dozens of 365 groups you can join. There’s also lots of great sharing options through Twitter and the Blog It feature.

Projects to do daily

  • Find a new photographer everyday
  • Share a favourite website
  • Take a daily photo or video clip
  • Share an old photo from your archive
  • Share a quick tip or technique
  • Retweet or reblog daily

If you have a 365 project planned then let us know!

Ooooo that’s a great idea – I’d also add http://www.LiveCloud.com. This is an especially good site for hosting photos – if you become a pro you can even upload full resolution photos (while keeping only the thumbnails available to the public)…. and if you want to do a friends-only 365 project that is a little more private, they have seven different levels of privacy!

I love all of the suggestions here. I’m planning to do one that shares a photo from my old archives, as I have so many that I need to sort through. The digital photographers perennial problem. :P

There’s a group of about 26 photographers of a diverse range that will be undergoing a 365 Project in a couple of days. Here’s our site.
