Telegraph Pictures and The Guardian Eyewitness iPad apps

This week we’re looking at two free iPad apps from the British press, Telegraph Pictures and The Guardian Eyewitness. Both offer fairly similar content inasmuch as they are news related image showcases but they both take a slightly different and interesting approach.
Telegraph Pictures
At the time of writing this iPad app sits at the top of the free apps in the iTunes store under the Photography category so it seemed a no brainer download.
What you get
Daily pictures covering all sorts of areas and subjects. In my first week with this app there were 5-12 images appearing daily.
14-day archive
Full-screen view
Captions for each photo
Availability from 5am every day
The Telegraph Pictures for iPad is ideal for photography and news enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the power of storytelling through beautiful imagery.
At the end of the day I can’t really complain about a free app, especially one that shares great images. It would be nice to have more interaction with the app and have links to the Telegraph online articles.
The Guardian Eyewitness
Another high flyer in the photography category and altogether a slightly more slicker app than Telegraph Pictures.
What you get
Rolling access to the latest 100 images from our award-winning photography series – free
Custom designed interface built specifically to take advantage of the iPad.
Each photo selected from thousands to offer the most compelling visual experience on iPad
‘Pro tips’ written by our award-winning photography team to offer technical insights
Ability to save photos as favourites and share them via email, Twitter and Facebook
One picture a day sometimes just isn’t enough but the quality is very high. Like Telegraph Pictures it’ll be nice to have some links to The Guardian online. The pro tips are a little hit and miss and sometimes seem like a bit of an afterthought.
The sharing features are easy to use and simple enough and just add enough interaction to make it a bit more interesting.
Due to the fact the fact that there is only one image appearing daily means that I’m unlikely to be checking it everyday. On the other hand, the 12 daily images Telegraph Pictures share is sometimes too much and it becomes more of a news app rather than an online gallery.
