WordPress homepage SEO experiment

One of the reasons why we love WordPress is that we’re told it’s great for SEO. There’s certainly lots of great plugins you can use to give yourself that little extra boost but I wanted to experiment with a few other things.

A few weeks ago I came across an interesting article – http://www.wolf-howl.com/blogs/category-seo-wordpress-blogs-ecommerce/

The article describes the problem of maintaining rankings over time and suggests a few technique that could increase, or rather keep relevant, your past articles.

One technique is increase the amount of pages you show on your homepage.

To do this go to Settings > Reading and increase Blog Pages to show at most.

For my experiment I increased the number from 10 to 40.

Stats wise here’s where we started…..

Links from Google

Jan 2011 – Pages – 9485 Hits - 15793

Feb 2011 – Pages - 9442 Hits - 15190

And here’s where we ended up…

Links from Google

March 2011 – Pages – 10847 Hits - 17184

Obviously there are many extraneous variables at play, but in the month I used for the experiment there wasn’t any big boosts in terms of high ranking sites adding links. There has however been a big change in Google’s search algorithm so I’ll be keeping an eye on what changes this month.

I’d say I was pretty happy with the 14% increase in traffic from Google but what was also interesting was the fact that traffic from Bing and Windows Live was up 300%
